Depression doesn’t care about logic. It doesn’t care if you’re sleeping enough or eating right. Sometimes it just feels like a heavy, wet wool blanket draped over your entire nervous system. The treatment landscape is crowded, messy, and often exhausting. So when researchers accidentally stumbled onto a potential aid for depressive symptoms, the reaction was cautious, but interested.
A study published in Acta Psychologica suggests that wearing a cooling cap for 30 days might ease symptoms. Not cure. Ease.
The findings are intriguing but preliminary. This wasn’t a massive clinical trial. It was small. It was accidental. But it raises a specific question: Can cooling the scalp help calm the brain’s rumination loops?
How the Study Was Conducted
Twenty-four college students, aged 18 to 26, participated in this pilot. They were split into two groups. One group received the intervention. The other served as a control.
The intervention was specific. Participants wore a Welkins Arctic cooling cap. The device circulated liquid coolant around the scalp and upper neck. It maintained a precise temperature of 33 degrees Fahrenheit. For seven consecutive days, participants sat in a quiet, dim room for 30 minutes. They listened to ocean sounds. They just sat there.
The control group sat in the same room. Same lights. Same sounds. But no cap.
Before the sessions, participants completed neuropsychological questionnaires measuring depression, anxiety, and worry. Afterward, they retake those surveys. They also underwent cognitive testing and electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain electrical activity. A final assessment happened on the eighth day to check for longer-term effects.
The Results: Brain Waves and Mood Scores
The data showed distinct differences.
The cooling cap group experienced a significant rise in alpha brain wave activity. Specifically, about a 4 percent increase. Alpha waves are associated with relaxed wakefulness. People with depression often have low alpha activity. The control group saw a slight decrease instead.
Depression scores dropped faster in the cooling group.
The intervention group saw a five-point decrease in their depression scores. The control group dropped by about half a point. That’s a notable gap for such a short timeframe.
But how did this happen?
The Accidental Discovery
The researchers weren’t initially looking for a mental health breakthrough. They study sports concussions.
“Our lab mostly works on cooling the head and颈 in athletes post-concussions,” says Madeline McLaughlin, a co-author and researcher at the Penn State Sport Concussion Research &Service Lab. “We noticed that people would try the cap and tell us it felt good. It helped them relax. I nearly fell asleep when I tried it myself. Given these anecdotes, we put together this study to see if there was anything real there.”
They were looking for physical recovery metrics. They found mental health signals instead.
Why Cooling Might Reduce Depressive Rumination
The study didn’t definitively prove the mechanism. But researchers have hypotheses.
Selective head cooling lowers brain metabolism. It also increases blood flow. This physiological shift may help tamp down rumination—the obsessive, repetitive dwelling on negative thoughts.
“Depression isn’t always low energy,” says Thea Gallagher, PsyD, at NYU Langone Health. “It’s often emotional distress. It’s a nervous system that feels chronically on. If an intervention shifts the body into a calmer state, it creates conditions that make emotional regulation easier.”
There’s also the attentional component. Depression pulls you backward into the past or forward into hopeless futures.
“A novel physical sensation may gently shift attention to the body and the present,” Gallagher explains. “It functions somewhat like a mindfulness exercise.”
The rise in alpha waves supports this. It suggests the brain was actually entering a different state of activity.
Can You Just Use an Ice Pack?
Probably not in the same way.
The researchers used a specific medical-grade device. It provided both cooling and slight compression. It stayed colder for longer. A standard ice pack melts quickly. It offers uneven temperature.
“We’re not sure how well a DIY solution would work,” McLaughlin admits.
If you’re considering trying something similar at home, manage your expectations. The specific cap used in this experiment is advanced. A bag of frozen peas won’t deliver the same controlled, sustained cooling effect. The research hasn’t yet validated over-the-counter alternatives for this specific purpose.
The Bottom Line
Don’t buy a cooling cap and throw away your antidepressants.
This was a small study with 24 participants. The experts are clear on this point.
“It’s a promising adjunct, not a replacement,” Gallagher says.
If future, larger studies support these findings, cooling caps could become another tool in the toolkit. Something to help some people feel calmer. Something to provide modest mood improvements when other treatments feel insufficient.
For now, it’s a lead worth following. Not a rule to live by.
Depression is complex. The brain is weirder than we know. And sometimes, relief comes from somewhere unexpected—like a chilly hat in a dark room.
